Aimuattne’0 OInUege Vol. 10 Raleigh, NC ‘Unity Begins With You’ November, 1980 Coronation 1980 An Afro -American Dream Unfolds By Dave Byrd A salute to Miss Saint Augustine’s College was in the mainstream of activities held Oc tober 24. It was the commencement of the 23rd annual Coronation of Miss St. Augustine’s College. The coronation activities began October 22 with a concert featuring “Reflections” in the Fine Arts Building Theatre followed on Oc tober 23, with a fashion show. October 24 was dedicated to honor Miss Magdalene Johnson, a native of Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. Ms. Johnson, presently a senior at the “Aug,” was honored by the campus organization queens. Four other distinguished guest queens also attended the coronation in honor of Ms. St. Aug. Miss North CaroHna State University, Miss Shaw University, Miss Livingston College and Miss Howard Universi ty. Miss St. Augustine’s College 1979-80, Miss Joyce Stephenson, did the honors of crowning Miss St. Augustine’s College 1980-81, Miss Magdalene Johnson. I asked Magdalene to describe her feelings during the special occasion and she stated, “It made me feel that there were many people out there rooting for me, and it’s a mo ment that I will never forget in my entire life. It’s a moment I’ll always cherish.” Magdalene is the first Interna tional Student Queen in the history of Saint Augustine’s College. Miss Johnson is a Business Ad ministration major here at the “Aug.” She indicated that she will pursue further education at either UNC-Chapel Hill or NCSU at Raleigh. She also indicated the desire to study Agriculture in order to prepare herself with an adequate background to help the production criteria in Liberia. The Pen staff and the entire Saint Augustine’s College family salute you, Ms. Magdalene Johnson, as your dream has but only begun to unfold and flourish.
